Common Allergies in Illinois & Wisconsin

When allergy season hits, finding relief from your symptoms is likely one of your top priorities. Even though this typically only lasts for six to eight weeks in the spring, it can still make those who suffer from allergies very uncomfortable.

If you live in Illinois or Wisconsin, your allergies are probably acting up because of one of these three things:

  • Mold – Though mold can cause allergy symptoms year-round, they become significantly worse in the spring. This is the time when molds release their seeds and send them into the air. These seeds are omnipresent, and those who are sensitive to them suffer the worse allergy symptoms at this time. It can cause sneezing, runny noses, and itchy, watery eyes.
  • Trees – Trees release small cells of pollen into the air, and the wind carries them around. This is commonly known as “hay fever.” You often see it with oak, poplar, hickory, walnut, and ash trees. This pollen can cause congestion, itchy eyes and ears.
  • Flowers – Flowers also produce pollen that can cause allergies. The flowers that cause the worse symptoms are daisies, chamomile, goldenrod, and chrysanthemums.

How to Survive Allergy Season

Though seasonal allergies differ from state to state, everyone who experiences them has asked themselves the same question: How can I beat them?

  • Take medicine for symptom relief – In some cases, taking allergy medicine regularly is all you need to feel better. If your symptoms are worse one year versus another, though, you may need to take a couple different medications for relief. If these medications aren’t working, see an allergist who can prescribe something better for you.
  • Have your air ducts cleaned – Clean air ducts mean you have less pet dander, pollen, dust mites, and other allergens in your home. Most have fewer allergy symptoms when these allergens are removed from the air they’re breathing.
  • Take off your work clothes as soon as you get home – Change immediately after getting home so you don’t carry allergens with you and distribute them throughout your house. Remove your shoes when you walk in, change your clothes, and shower at night to wash off any lingering pollen.
  • Work out inside – Instead of running and exercising outside, do it inside to lower the chance of your allergies acting up. Pollen counts tend to be highest in the middle of the afternoon, so try to run errands and spend time outside in the morning or evening.
