Myth: Lowering your heat pump temperature at night lowers your heating bill.
Reality: With a programmable or conventional thermostat, lowering the temperature by more than two degrees could cost you more money.
Myth: Turning off your appliances saves energy (and money).
Reality: Most appliances (as well as TVs, tablets, phones etc.) use power even when turned off. To save energy, unplug the appliances/devices.
Myth: Turning up the thermostat will heat your home faster.
Reality: It doesn’t matter the current setting, your home warms up at the same rate. Cranking the heat up could waste energy.
Myth: Replacing your AC unit with an efficient one immediately lowers your bill.
Reality: This is only true if the unit is properly sized, installed and well-maintained (read here for DO I NEED AN AC TUNE-UP?).
Myth: Leaving your air conditioner running all day prevents you from having to “re-cool” your home later.
Reality: The second you turn your unit off; you start saving money. If your home is insulated and well-sealed, it will stay cool unless it’s excessively hot outside.
Myth: Installing ceiling fans to force the warm air down during the winter can keep your home warm.
Reality: Again, a well-insulated and sealed home with a forced-air furnace won’t see any difference with this tactic.
